What is a veteran?

The definition of a veteran, according to the Australian Veterans’ Recognition (Putting Veterans and Their Families First) Bill 2019 is ‘a person who has served, or is serving, as a member of the Permanent Forces or as a member of the Reserves’.

As previous Minister for Veterans’ and Defence Personnel, Darren Chester, noted, ‘… when we think of the word veteran, we tend to think of someone in their sixties or seventies. But from an ADF perspective, our veterans are often in their late twenties or early thirties.
