Bowling in Ballina

As part of our work with the NSW Government, Veteran Sport Australia is partnering with Bowls Australia on a regional bowls tour around NSW.

It’s proving to be a big hit.

Testing the greens in Ballina

Earlier this month, a Family Bowls Day brought veterans from across the Far North Coast together in Ballina at the Cherry Street Sports.

The day highlighted the physical and mental health benefits associated with the sport and community of bowls. Veterans of all ages, and their families, from across the region attended the inclusive, free event.

In addition to everyone being able to come together for a chat and make new connections, there was the chance to try out the sport, benefit from some professional coaching and for kids to have fun over a round of Jack Attack.

To top it off, a number of participants then took to an ice-skating rink located at, and supplied by, the club to test their skating skills and cool off.

The Honourable Ben Franklin MLC came along on the day, speaking to veterans and families who were participating.

The NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Energy and the Arts encouraged others to get behind initiatives and events that are designed to bring together veterans, their families, and the local community.

“The NSW Government is proud to be a supporter of these wonderful events,” said Mr Franklin MLC “Veteran Sport Australia and Bowls Australia in conjunction with local bowling clubs have a strong history of hosting these great days out to harness the power of social sport in helping veterans and their families on the road to recovery and connecting with the local community.”

Deputy Mayor of Ballina Shire Council, Sharon Cadwallader, echoed this sentiment and highlighted that more support needs to be given to programs such as these in the local area. She was excited to hear that the Ballina RSL sub Branch, in conjunction with local sporting bodies and clubs, will be continuing to work further with Veteran Sport Australia to create more opportunities like this in Ballina.

Our thanks goes to Cherry Street Sports for their support of the day in Ballina and to Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, which held the first tour event late last year.

We’re now all looking forward to the tour making its way to Port Macquarie and Tamworth next month. If you live close by and are keen to give bowls a go, make sure you get in contact!
