This time almost five years ago, Team Australia Co

This time almost five years ago, Team Australia Co-Captain Nicole Bradley was leading by example and taking the stage to compete in powerlifting, discus and shotput at the Invictus Games Sydney 2018.

“When I left the army I didn’t know what work I was going to do, how I could define myself or what skills I could use,” said Bradley. “Having the amazing honour of being named a team captain (in 2018) has shown me that I’m really valued, that I’m a real person and people have faith in me.”

At the time Nicole said she was keen to use her role as Australian co-captain to provide a calming influence and a positive example, not only to her teammates, but to all people going through a hard time. Nicole did just that, but is also a shining example of taking the Invictus philosophy beyond the Games, continuing to have this impact on others through her ongoing involvement at her local hockey club through coaching, volunteering, mentoring, administration and participating. Testament that local sport, connection and community have the power to transform veterans' lives and those around them.

This October 20-27 marks five years since the Sydney Games, and since then Invictus Australia has impacted almost 6,500 veterans & families through sport in local communities, plus delivered two more teams to Invictus Games events in partnership with @defenceaustralia. These outcomes are only possible through collaboration and shared purpose with partners, national and other sporting bodies, ESOs and the support of Invictus Alumni and the wider community throughout the years. It was an unforgettable day of learning to surf in South Australia with Ryan from @the.surfers.journey , as we harnessed the power of the ocean to promote mental wellness. “Surf & Serenity” is a unique event that combines the thrill of riding the waves with the therapeutic benefits of connecting with the sea 🏄‍♀️🏄🌊

We saw all abilities giving it a go and loved the experience of ‘surfing as therapy’ that @the.surfers.journey is working to provide to the veteran and frontline community.
