Elaine’s Journey of Resilience: From Army To The Boxing Ring
Elaine’s 13-year service in the Australian Army shaped her identity and tested her resilience. The demands were relentless, having an impact on her mental health and ultimately leading to her discharge. Following her military career, Elaine faced another battle—a cervical cancer diagnosis. Yet, through each of these trials, she refused to let adversity define her, utilising sport as a way to protect her physical, mental and social wellbeing. The strength she built during her years in service became her foundation in the face of this new fight, and she emerged with a renewed determination to live fully.
Transitioning to civilian life posed its own challenges. Determined to find a new path, Elaine pursued a Master’s in Occupational Health, Safety, Environment, and Hygiene, later leading her into the resource industry working in Oil, Gas and Mining. Yet, her military experiences had a lasting emotional impact on Elaine, and she was diagnosed with PTSD, prompting her to pause and focus on her mental well-being.
The Power of Sport: A New Chapter Begins
Throughout her journey, sport became Elaine’s anchor. After surviving cancer, she set out to live her “second chance” fully, taking on new physical challenges, partaking in marathons and triathlons such as the New York Marathon. Even during COVID lockdowns, she kept her training up, determined to maintain her strength and focus.
When the Royal Commission into Veterans and Defence Suicide began, however, Elaine found herself confronting the painful stories of other veterans. Sharing her own experiences and hearing the experiences of fellow veterans left her feeling lost, without a sense of purpose. But then, an expression of interest for boxing emerged, lighting a new spark in her life and Elaine jumped at the change to get involved.
Boxing: A Lifeline and a Community
Boxing quickly became Elaine’s lifeline, a new source of resilience and purpose. She found Fortitude Boxing Gym, a place that became more than just a training facility—it was her sanctuary. Fortitude’s community welcomed her wholeheartedly, offering support through every high and low, pushing her to be the best version of herself. The coaches and gym members became her family, and the camaraderie reminded her of the strength of teamwork and connection, something she hadn’t felt since her service.
“Boxing has given me confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging,” Elaine shared. “I’m proud to represent not just myself, but the incredible people at Fortitude who have been part of my journey every step of the way.” – Elaine, Veteran.
A Journey of Resilience Beyond Invictus
Elaine’s journey in boxing also stems from resilience developed outside the ring. She had previously applied for the Invictus Games, but was unsuccessful. She acknowledges the role that the Invictus Games have played in supporting the recovery and rehabilitation of many veterans. Despite the disappointment, she used this setback to fuel her personal journey.
“When I applied for the Invictus Games and wasn’t selected, it was tough, but it didn’t stop me. I realised it wasn’t about chasing medals—it was about moving forward no matter what. I kept pushing myself through sport and movement, not just for my sake, but to be an example of what true strength looks like.”
Elaine was determined to turn her path into a message of resilience and leadership, especially for her nieces and nephews. “I want them to know that resilience isn’t about how many times you win, but how many times you get back up. Even when life doesn’t go the way you hoped, you keep pushing, moving, and striving to be better. Resilience is about how you live, lead, and inspire others to keep going, no matter the obstacles.”
Pan Pacific Masters Games: A New Milestone
This week, Elaine achieved a major milestone at the Pan Pacific Masters Games, taking home the gold in the Women’s Catch division. Her win was not only a testament to her skill but to the unwavering support of the Fortitude community that had lifted her every step of the way.
“Competing as part of Team Veteran at the Pan Pacific Masters Games is incredibly humbling and empowering for me,” she said. “To stand in the ring, representing veterans and honoring the resilience, strength, and determination of those who have served, fills me with immense pride.” Competing alongside over 60 veterans across various sports as part of Invictus Australia’s Team Veteran was deeply significant, reinforcing her passion for sport and camaraderie.
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back, Elaine’s focus is no longer just on winning. At 54, she’s driven by a deeper goal: to show others what resilience truly looks like. “I wanted to see how far I could go,” she shared. “Yes, I wanted to win—that’s the fighter in me—but more importantly, I wanted to enjoy the journey, embrace the experience, and honor the work that has got me here.”
