"The Invictus Games gave me a reason to leave the house. It gave me a reason to overcome my anxiety and socialise. It gave me a reason to go to the gym. And most importantly, this has allowed me to continue to show my three kids and husband, well beyond the games, that I can be strong again" - Vanessa Broughill.

Lastly in our 'Inspired by Invictus' series, meet Vanessa. Serving in both the Army and Navy, Vanessa found herself struggling mentally, unable to find a solution that positively changed her life – until she learnt about the Invictus Games. Selected to be part of Team Australia for the Invictus Games 2018, she describes this as the catalyst to her recovery journey post service.

After experiencing the healing power of sport first hand, Vanessa became passionate ensuring opportunities are available for the wider defence community, especially for the families of veterans, who often experience the challenge of the defence force alongside the veteran themselves. Today, she is still engaged in sport, competing, coaching and participating her local netball club. She is also one of our Veteran Engagement Managers, bringing local sporting opportunities to South Australian veterans and families.

While we are marking 6 years since the Sydney Games, we acknowledge their success was built on a foundation laid by countless individuals and groups and Team Australia competitors. Today, we celebrate the pioneers of the Invictus movement in Australia, and those who continue to work tirelessly to support our defence community.

Since sport is such an important element in the lives of the defence community, it was great to see the smiles, camaraderie and moments of connection on display when our Defence Community Sport Expo headed to Stockton, NSW last weekend, welcoming over 150 attendees.

These Expos provide a platform for veterans and their families to connect with local sporting bodies, ex-service organisations and other members of the defence community, fostering a sense of purpose and belonging. We look forward to facilitating more events like this in the future to support the defence community.

Doug Griffiths, a navy veteran who is currently in Kona, Hawaii ahead of the Ironman World Championships was farewelled over the weekend by his fellow Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 Team Australia competitors.

Sergeant Emily Lahey and Jo Lovell, two of Doug's teammates, were eager to send Doug off with their best wishes, with Emily delivering a heartfelt poem to her now lifelong friend. Here is a snippet of Emily's kind words:
