Reflecting on Dusseldorf 2023: Invictus Games alumnus pens poetry to capture the moment
As 2023 draws to a close, we reflect upon the achievements of the Veteran and Defence community we exist to serve. For competitors from Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023 Team Australia, that meant reflecting on their journey to and participation at the Games in Germany earlier this year.
Whether it be perusing photos, reliving moments through videos or noting down thoughts, this reflection has looked different for all competitors. Steve Richards, who represented Team Australia in wheelchair basketball, table tennis and archery, created a piece of poetry detailing his Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023 journey. Read the touching piece below.
In Dusseldorf’s embrace, the stage was set,
Where warriors gathered, challenges met,
Amidst the cheers and the vibrant crowd,
My Invictus Games journey began, proud.
Wheelchair Basketball, a battle on wheels,
With every dribble and shot that appeals,
I soared and conquered, my spirit alight,
Defying limits with all my might.
Table Tennis, a dance of precision,
A warrior’s finesse, a true exhibition,
Singles and Doubles, with partners by my side,
Together we conquered, our skills amplified.
In Archery’s realm, I took my aim,
The bow in my hand, no obstacle could tame,
Through focus and strength, I found my mark,
Each arrow released sparked a triumphant spark.
These Games were not just medals and fame,
But a testament to resilience in every name,
For we carry burdens no one should bear,
Yet rise above, showing others we care.
Though I wish for no one to bear this plight,
These Games unite us with unwavering light,
Through pain and sacrifice, we’ve found our way,
In the Invictus Games, we stand tall today.
So here’s to the journey, the battles fought,
To every warrior for whom victory was sought,
The Invictus spirit forever within our core,
Together we stand, always Unconquered.
