Unstoppable on the Slopes: Katie Chapman’s Triumph at Invictus Games Day 5

When Katie Chapman left the Army, she believed her days of sport were over. Feeling both physically and mentally exhausted, she couldn’t imagine a way back to the sense of belonging and purpose she once found in her team. However, her snowboarding community, whom she lovingly calls her ‘snow sports family,’ had other plans. Through their unwavering support and encouragement, Katie rediscovered her love for sport and began a journey that led her to the international stage, competing for Team Australia at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.

The Role of Community in Recovery

Speaking about her journey to the Games, Katie shared how her snow sports family played an instrumental role in her recovery after transitioning out of the Defence Force. “A lot of people leave defence and suddenly feel isolated and cut off,” Katie explained. “I didn’t have that at all. My snow sports family stayed in contact, invited me to catch up, and even welcomed me to Army and ADF competitions. They encouraged me to keep snowboarding and competing in civilian events. When Kris, one of my snow sport friends, found out about the winter Invictus Games, she called me immediately, believing in me even when I didn’t feel ready. That’s why I’m here today.”

Excitement for the Invictus Games

Katie’s excitement for this competition was evident even before arriving in Canada. “I was most excited about competing alongside such an incredible group of people. My teammates and the staff have been so supportive, making this an incredibly positive experience. And of course, I couldn’t wait for the snowboarding race. I love racing, and there’s nothing like representing your country. The atmosphere here is unbeatable.”

A Stellar Performance on the Slopes

Katie’s performance at Whistler’s advanced snowboarding competition was a true testament to her skill and determination. With a flawless run, she finished the course in 22.15 seconds, claiming the gold medal. Her controlled turns and edge precision demonstrated her skill on the board. The atmosphere on the mountain was charged with energy, as Team Australia and the crowd cheered her on, providing the support she needed to stay focused. After finishing, Katie waited for the other competitors, including Cindy, who placed in third, claiming the bronze medal with a time of 29.25 seconds. The two shared an embrace at the bottom, a moment that showcased the camaraderie between Team Australia. The event wrapped with all five competitors running to embrace each other at the conclusion of the final run, showcasing the true power of sport in bringing people together.

Katie’s gold medal was the result of not just her technical ability, but also her resilience and the strong sense of community within the sport. Off the slopes, Katie was still buzzing with excitement, reflecting on the experience and the collective support that had carried her to victory. Her performance was a reminder of how far dedication, teamwork, and perseverance can take you, both as an individual and as part of a larger community.

Team Australia’s Success

Team Australia had a phenomenal day, adding 2 medals to their tally. The camaraderie and determination of the team continue to inspire all those watching. Team Australia was proudly represented by nine incredible competitors today in the intermediate to advance field: PO Justin Brown and Nigel Coutts in skiing and CPL Jason Marsh, Colin McCallum, Dane Greenstreet, Alexander Gair, Ty King, Katie Chapman and Cindy Chawner in snowboarding. Congratulations to Katie for securing the gold, and Cindy for taking home the bronze!

All competitors out on the slopes experienced an electric atmosphere and each competitor gave it their all. We couldn’t be prouder of everyone who competed today!

Looking Ahead: Life After the Games

As the Games approach their conclusion, Katie is already thinking about life after Vancouver Whistler. “After the Games, I plan to continue snowboarding and staying involved with my snow sports family. I also want to use my experience to encourage other veterans to reconnect with sport, no matter where they’re at in their recovery journey.”

Katie’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength found in community and the transformative power of sport. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to follow Team Australia’s incredible journey at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.
