'I’d like to go out and say ‘you can do it’. 'I’d like to go out and say ‘you can do it’. It doesn’t matter what you have – if you can see your injury or even if you can’t – there’s always a place for you'' - Shaun Hillman Invictus Games 2023 competitor 💚💛

“I have a number of medical issues – achilles tendonitis in both legs, which has caused other issues with my lower back and ankles, and shoulder injuries.

“I’m not able to run or anything like that any more so cycling was the sport I picked up to keep me active, to help meet people and for my mental health. It’s my passion sport,” he said.

Sport has the power to heal wounds, both physical and invisible and through our partnerships with sporting bodies around the nation Invictus Australia can facilitate the defence community finding veteran friendly sport in their area.

For Mark Armstrong sport has played a large role in his rehabilitation.

"I have had to change my sports to fit in with my current medical conditions. Although I am unable to compete in the sports I did previously, I have adapted to sports that allow me to feel good about myself whilst still being challenging. Sport has helped me to accept that I am not able to do certain activities I once could. I am more at ease with myself and others now."

Mark and his family are like many in the defence community who use sport for recovery. Through our partnerships with national sporting organisations we are able to run 'come and try days' for a number of adaptive and veteran friendly sports around Australia.

There is nothing worse for a sports enthusiast tha There is nothing worse for a sports enthusiast than wanting to play a sport but being unable to do so because of a physical injury.

That was the dilemma Daniel King, from Sydney, faced after experiencing a number of service-related musculoskeletal injuries and plantar fasciitis in both feet.

Since becoming part of Team Australia’s Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023 team, the former Royal Australian Armoured Corps soldier has discovered a love for cycling and power lifting and a renewed interest in swimming.

“I’ve always been a swimmer but have never swum competitively. For me it was just for fitness,” Daniel said.

“Now I’ve joined the Penrith Masters Swimming Club and two weeks before we came here I competed at an event and really enjoyed it. I’m already booked into the NSW Short Course Championships following the Games.”

Best of luck to Daniel at NSW short course 🏊‍♂️🫶

There are so many adaptive and veteran friendly sports available around Australia! To find out more head to our website invictusaustralia.org to find your local community sport and experience the power of sport for recovery 💛
