Recharging the Soul: Invictus introduces Yoga for Veterans in Toowoomba

In the QLD city of Toowoomba, a transformative program is empowering veterans and their families to find solace and inner strength through the art of yoga. As part of Invictus Australia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the health and wellbeing of veterans, a regular, free yoga class has become a staple in the lives of members of the local Defence community, seeking balance, relaxation, and rejuvenation following their service.

Arise Yoga: A Haven of Wellness

At the heart of the yoga program in Toowoomba is Arise Yoga, led by the passionate and dedicated instructor, Josie. With a deep understanding of the transformative power of yoga, Josie has created a safe and supportive space for veterans to embark on their yoga journey. Her trauma-informed approach ensures that participants feel comfortable and respected, providing a nurturing environment for their physical and emotional healing.

Josie’s enthusiasm for connecting people with the practice of yoga shines through her teaching. She shares,

“I am so honored to share this powerful practice with the Defense community. When I hear someone tell me they felt peaceful for the first time in weeks or that they have found more mobility or strength, I am so thankful for the gifts of yoga and the opportunity to impart them.”

deep healing wisdom of yoga

Yoga is more than just physical exercise; it is a holistic practice that nurtures the mind, body, and soul. Through the integration of postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, yoga offers a multitude of benefits for overall wellbeing. It enhances strength, flexibility, and balance while cultivating mindfulness and awareness. The practice of yoga helps individuals manage stress, regulate the nervous system, and restore inner harmony, leading to a sense of peace and tranquility.

inclusivity & connection

The yoga classes organised by Invictus Australia and Arise Yoga are open to all, embracing veterans, their families, and the wider community. One noteworthy aspect of this program is the encouragement for men to participate, challenging the misconception that yoga is aimed at women. By fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers, the program has attracted a diverse range of participants, including couples, ex-serving personnel, and active members of the defense forces.

Dan, a current serving member of the Defense Force and a regular attendee of the yoga classes, highlights the importance of yoga for veterans’ overall wellbeing. He shares,

“Yoga allows me to focus on strengthening my body and supports my long-term health goals. It’s a great mental and physical health support option for veterans that should be available across Australia.”
